Permanent Residence in Canada for Dental Practitioners in India

Dentistry as an occupation in Canada is regulated. This means that any dental practitioner, either local or foreigner must obtain a certification and licensure before they can become eligible for employment in Canada.

The National Dental Examining Board of Canada (NDEB) oversees the general dentist certification process of both Canadian graduates and those trained outside of Canada.

Unfortunately, an Indian Dental degree is a non-accredited dental degree according to the National Dental Examining Board of Canada (NDEB). You will have to complete the NDEB equivalency process before applying for the licensure to practise dentistry in Canada.

Here’s a quick self-assessment tool run by NDEB to know more about the process of becoming a dentist in Canada after completing BDS in India.

As easy as it may sound, the entire process is known to be resource-draining. Upon successful completion, you can apply for various jobs available for Dentists in Canada which fall under the NOC code list 3113. A Dentist in Canada may earn anywhere ranging from CA $120,000 – $240,000 annually and after completing Dental course in Canada you will get jobs in the following titles:

  • Dental Surgeon
  • General Practice Dentist
  • Oral & dental surgeon
  • Endodontist
  • Implantologist- dentistry
  • Oral & Maxillofacial surgeon
  • Oral medicine specialist
  • Oral radiologist
  • Pediatric dentist
  • Pedodontist
  • Periodontist
  • Prosthodontist
  • Stomatologist
  • Oral Medicine specialist
  • Oral surgeon

Aspirants may apply under the Express Entry system or qualify under any one of the participating Canada Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP) to obtain permanent residency with/without a job offer in Canada. They can also be accompanied by their family to settle permanently in Canada.

To become a dental hygienist in Canada after studying BDS in Georgia (Tbilisi), you would need to meet the requirements of the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario (CDHO), or the regulatory body in the province where you wish to practice.

In general, the requirements for international dental graduates to become dental hygienists in Canada include:

      1. Successfully complete a diploma or degree program in dental hygiene from a Canadian institution accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada (CDAC).

      2. Pass the National Dental Hygiene Certification Board (NDHCB) examination.

      3. Meet the language proficiency requirements by taking the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam or the Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP) exam.

      4. Complete a clinical competency evaluation or a bridging program if required by the regulatory body.

As an international dental graduate, you may be required to complete additional coursework or training to meet the requirements for dental hygiene practice in Canada. You may also be required to obtain a work permit or residency status in Canada.

It is recommended that you contact the CDHO or the regulatory body in the province where you wish to practice to obtain specific information on the requirements and process for becoming a dental hygienist in Canada.

To pursue a master’s degree in dentistry in Canada after completing BDS from India, your daughter would need to meet the admission requirements of the Canadian dental school where she wishes to study.

Some of the general requirements for admission to a Canadian dental school may include:

Completion of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent.

A minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Completion of prerequisite courses, which may include biology, chemistry, physics, and calculus.

Submission of official transcripts, letters of recommendation, and a personal statement.

English language proficiency, which may be demonstrated by achieving a certain score on a standardized test such as the TOEFL or IELTS.

In addition to meeting the admission requirements, your daughter may also need to pass the National Dental Examining Board of Canada (NDEB) certification process, which is required for licensure to practice dentistry in Canada.

The cost of pursuing a master’s degree in dentistry in Canada can vary depending on the specific program and institution. Tuition fees can range from approximately CAD $30,000 to CAD $50,000 per year, and living expenses can add an additional CAD $10,000 to CAD $15,000 per year.

To apply for the MD program in dentistry at McGill University in Canada, you will need to meet the admission requirements and submit a complete application. The specific requirements may vary depending on the program and year of entry, so it is important to check the admissions website for the most up-to-date information.

Some of the general requirements for admission to the MD program in dentistry at McGill University may include:

Completion of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent, with specific prerequisite courses in biology, chemistry, and physics.

A minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Submission of official transcripts, letters of recommendation, and a personal statement.

English language proficiency, which may be demonstrated by achieving a certain score on a standardized test such as the TOEFL or IELTS.

Completion of the Dental Aptitude Test (DAT), which is a standardized test used to assess aptitude and academic ability for dental programs in Canada.

In terms of preparing for the NDEB exams, which are required for licensure to practice dentistry in Canada, there are several resources available to help you study. The NDEB website provides detailed information on the certification process and exam formats, as well as study materials such as sample questions and practice exams.

Additionally, there are several review courses and study guides available from private companies and institutions that specialize in dental exam preparation. These resources can help you focus your study efforts and prepare effectively for the exams.

It is recommended that you start preparing for the NDEB exams well in advance of your planned entry into the MD program at McGill University, as these exams are a critical component of your path to licensure and practice in Canada.

Yes, if you want to practice dentistry as a licensed professional in Canada, you will need to complete the National Dental Examining Board of Canada (NDEB) certification process, even if you have already completed a BDS degree in another country. This applies to all international dental graduates, including those who have completed their dental education in India.

The NDEB certification process is required for all dentists seeking licensure to practice dentistry in Canada, and includes two exams: the Written Examination and the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). The exams are designed to assess the knowledge, skills, and competencies required for safe and effective dental practice in Canada.

In addition to the NDEB exams, you may also need to complete other requirements to qualify for licensure in Canada, such as completing a qualifying program or residency in Canada, or obtaining a work permit or visa.

If you are interested in pursuing a Master’s degree in dentistry in Canada, you may be able to apply for a program without completing the NDEB exams, depending on the specific requirements of the program. However, it is important to note that even if you are accepted into a Master’s program, you will still need to complete the NDEB exams in order to practice dentistry as a licensed professional in Canada.

Congratulations on completing your BDS degree and finishing your internship! As for your question, it’s great that you’re interested in pursuing a career in dentistry in Canada.

Here are a few steps you can take to help you make informed decisions about your career path in dentistry in Canada:

Research the regulatory requirements in BC: The first step is to research the regulatory requirements for dentists, dental assistants, and dental hygienists in BC. The College of Dental Surgeons of BC (CDSBC) is the regulatory body for dentists and dental therapists in the province, while the College of Dental Hygienists of BC (CDHBC) regulates dental hygienists.

Evaluate your BDS degree: You will need to have your BDS degree evaluated by the National Dental Examining Board of Canada (NDEB) to determine if it meets the educational requirements to practice dentistry in Canada. You will also need to pass the Assessment of Fundamental Knowledge (AFK) exam, which assesses the knowledge and skills required for the practice of dentistry in Canada.

Consider pursuing further education or training: If your BDS degree is not sufficient to meet the requirements for practicing dentistry in Canada, you may need to pursue further education or training. One option is to enroll in a dental assistant or dental hygienist program, which typically takes two years to complete. This may also give you the opportunity to gain some practical experience in the Canadian dental industry.

Explore job opportunities: Once you have met the regulatory requirements and obtained the necessary qualifications, you can start exploring job opportunities in the dental industry in BC. You can search for job openings online or through professional networks, and reach out to dental clinics or practices to inquire about potential opportunities.

It’s worth noting that the dental industry in Canada is highly competitive, so it’s important to have a clear understanding of the regulatory requirements and qualifications needed to succeed in your career path. Additionally, having a strong work ethic, excellent communication skills, and a passion for providing quality patient care are important qualities to have as a dental professional.

I hope this information helps you in selecting your career path in dentistry in Canada, and wish you all the best in your future endeavors.
